MARKET MANTRA

Prescription for medical care

Medical transcription (MT) is an allied healthcare profession, which deals with transcription, or conversion of voice-recorded reports as dictated by physicians or other healthcare professionals into text format. The healthcare industry is proving to be recession proof and a stable sector. One of the primary reasons is the growing and aging population, which will continue to boost the demand for medical services as an older age group requires proportionately larger number of medical tests, treatments and procedures that require documentation.
Medical transcription has pioneered the outsourcing wave to India. In fact, MT outsourcing had grabbed a lot of attention during 1995-97, well before business process outsourcing (BPO) became a household term. However, the industry witnessed a rough patch in 2000 due to quality discrepancies of Indian MT companies as compared to their US counterparts. Many Indian MT companies shut shop, but an industry consolidation followed leading to the emergence of a few serious players that brought together their expertise, efficiency and unique delivery model to capture the growth potential of the global MT industry.

CURRENT DEMAND

It is estimated that the current employment created by the India-based medical transcription vendors is approximately 20,000 that will more than double over the next two years. A highscope industry vertical within the healthcare outsourcing model is the Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) business, which is fast gaining ground in India. Rough estimates indicate that the Indian share of revenues from the offshoring of RCM services is estimated at USD 175-200 million and is expected to double in the next two years.

SKILL SET REQUIRED

A good medical transcriptionist is expected to have extensive knowledge of medical terminology and excellent English writing skills so that he or she is able to produce documents that are accurate and detailed. A skilled medical transcriptionist should also have an in-depth knowledge of medical transcription practices, be at ease with word processing, spelling and proofreading. He or she should also be adept at grammar, structure, and style. Strong research and analytical skills, sound listening abilities, working knowledge of the internet and a patient temperament are also important attributes.
People absorbed in this industry come with diverse qualifications and s ranging from graduates to doctoral degree holders who have pursued courses in pharmacy, science, engineering or even mathematics.

FUTURE PROSPECTS

The healthcare provider industry in the US is a large and growing market. It was recently pegged at USD 12 billion and is expected to reach USD 16.8 billion by 2010. At present nearly USD 250 million of the total outsourced work is offshored to destinations such as India, Philippines, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and China. Out of the work offshored, 78% is supplied by India.
Outsourcing is going to be a dominant trend for healthcare companies across the developed world, particularly the US. One of the key reasons that will lead to increased outsourcing from US companies is the Obama government's focus to reduce healthcare costs for the average American family. Since hospitals will have to accommodate more patients, medical aid is bound to get cheaper. Consequently companies will need to bring their costs down and outsourcing is an advantageous option for them.
In light of these circumstances according to Nasscom, medical transcription is projected to be India's fourth largest foreign exchange earner in about five years' time.

REMUNERATION

An entry level MT takes home around Rs 5,000-8,000 per month. Within a year's time, this can even rise to Rs 10,000 or more per month. An entry level MT can become a quality analyst within a period of two to four years. An experienced quality analyst draws anything from Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000, as a salary plus performance based incentives. In addition, employees can also explore opportunities in other related services in the healthcare vertical.
