And now, a course on Empathy

STUDENTS CAN BE TRAINED TO EMPATHISE , SAYS JOHN SHEA,WHO TEACHES A COURSE ON EMPATHY ATTHE SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY AND MINISTRY,BOSTON COLLEGE,US

AS part of the Master's programme in Pastoral Care and Counselling, empathy is a four-month course. The three-hour classes, held thrice a week, are divided into two sessions — theory and practical. Essentially, this course explores the central role of empathy as a theoretical and practical foundation for pastoral care and counselling.
The idea is to help students acquire some basic skills so that they can learn to empathise. For instance, two things are imperative when you are listening to somebody speaking. First is 'feeling' and second is 'content.' This means that when a speaker is talking to you, you should try and examine the texture of his or her feelings. Try and examine the person's body language, the way he or she speaks, and so on. Soon you will get vibes of the speaker's feelings. So when you respond, you manage to send positive vibes and the person feels a lot more comfortable. This may help the speaker to further open up. Next is 'content,' which refers to the vocabulary that a person is using. That helps you to choose the right words when you respond. The whole idea is to convince the person that you are actually 'with' him or her.
We hold proxy sessions. First, students are asked to form a trio. One plays the role of a counsellor, one speaks, and the other sits back and observes. It is done on a rotational basis, which means each student gets a chance to be a counsellor, a speaker and an observer. Once the session is over, we sit down and evaluate the responses of the speaker, the listener as well as the observer. Since we have three perspectives, it helps us to identify the gaps and work towards it. The most difficult part of teaching empathy is to make someone listen to the other person's problems. After all, these days nobody is ready to listen.
The eligibility criterion is a recognised Bachelor's degree. Anyone can apply. At present, international students amount for 10% of our student population. With a Master's in Pastoral Care and Counselling, one can find various jobs, including that of hospices, counsellors and chaplains.
